The events at Diyarbakır Prison (often referred to as the "Diyarbakır Zindanı") mark a critical turning point in the history of the Kurdish movement and the aftermath of Turkey's 1980 military coup. On this date, prominent political prisoners initiated a "Great Death Fast" ( Büyük Ölüm Orucu ) to protest the extreme torture and inhumane conditions of the facility.
