The story follows (Orlando Bloom), a French blacksmith grieving the loss of his wife and child. After discovering he is the illegitimate son of Baron Godfrey (Liam Neeson), Balian journeys to Jerusalem to seek redemption. He quickly becomes a key defender of the city against the forces of the Muslim leader Saladin (Ghassan Massoud), navigating a fragile peace between the leprous King Baldwin IV (Edward Norton) and warmongering factions led by Guy de Lusignan (Marton Csokas).
