When a fire is detected, the MD-11’s Flight Management Computer (FMC) and Alert Center trigger several immediate indicators: A master warning light flashes red. A high-frequency repetitive chime sounds.

Once the alarm is verified, the crew executes a "memory item" checklist. Pulling the fire handle performs several mechanical and electrical isolations simultaneously: it closes the fuel, hydraulic, and pneumatic bleed air valves. It also arms the fire extinguishing bottles. The MD-11 carries pressurized Halon containers that can be discharged into the engine nacelle. Interestingly, while the wing engines share a common fire extinguishing system, the center engine has its own dedicated bottles due to its distance from the wings.
