The Far Cry series has evolved from a simple 1999 tech demo featuring dinosaurs into one of gaming's most recognizable open-world franchises. Spanning over two decades, the series is defined by its "lawless frontier" settings—from tropical islands and African savannas to the snowy Himalayas—where players must survive against both despotic regimes and dangerous wildlife.

Originally developed by to showcase the CryEngine , the first game was a PC-exclusive technical marvel. Ubisoft later acquired the rights, transitioning the series to its internal studios and developing the Dunia Engine to support fully open worlds with realistic fire and physics.
