The 1620 Battle of Cecora, often termed the "Extermination of the Commonwealth Army," resulted in a catastrophic defeat for Polish-Lithuanian forces against the Ottoman Empire, leading to the destruction of the army and the death of Grand Hetman Stanisław Żółkiewski. The disaster followed a chaotic retreat near the Prut River, where the army was overrun, leading directly to a subsequent, larger Ottoman invasion.
